Early Warning Signs of Vaginal Infection and Home Remedies

The vagina is the phenomenal word which is related to the female sex organ in mammals.  In the case of human beings, the female reproductive system includes a series of organs, both internal and external.

The human vagina is an internal sex organ which is a muscular tube or channel type of organ that extends from the vulva to cervix. It’s an organ in woman’s body that undergoes long-term changes that begin from neonate to puberty and from the starting off period to menopause.

Though the vagina has an autonomous cleansing system, still it needs care and some basic cleanliness as it could get infected from various sources.

Early Symptoms and Signs of Vaginal Infection are:

  • Burning sensation
  • Itching
  • Unpleasant odour
  • Abnormal discharge

Though a healthy vagina has bacteria and yeast, the infection starts when something disturbs the balance. It is necessary to know the facts that can upset the healthy balance.  They are-

  • Changes in hormone level.
  • Douche.
  • Unhealthy habits.
  • Antibiotics
  • Lack of common hygiene.

Types of Vaginal Infection:

There are three common types of vaginal infection, which are caused by fungus or bacteria. Here we are trying to sort out home remedies for different types of vaginal infection. Here we go-

1. Yeast Infection:

Vaginal yeast infection is caused by the most common species of fungus, Candida. Though, as we have mentioned earlier that some bacteria and fungus lives naturally inside our body including vagina in a small number, without causing any harm.

The Signs of Vaginal Infection come out as the yeast begins to grow in huge number when they get a favourable body condition like moist, warmth, airless environment.

In this situation, the increased number of fungus, Candida Albicans develops a vaginal infection.


Vaginosis or common yeast infection in the vagina shows some when getting infections by the fungus Candia Albicans. Those symptoms and Signs of Vaginal Infection are:

  • Thick white discharge from the vagina.
  • Itching in the affected area.
  • Redness of the vulva
  • Unusual odour.

2. Bacterial Infection:

Unlike the fungus, there also lives a good bacterium, Lactobacilli, in the vagina. 

If the numbers of this friendly bacterium become low in number, a bacterial infection occurs in the vagina, known as Bacterial vaginosis.

3. Trichomonas:

Other than the bacterial and yeast infection, there is another type of infection caused by sexual intercourse, known as Trichomonas.

This is caused by a single-celled parasite, which transfers from partner to partner.

Home Remedy for Vaginal Infection:

Long before medical shops and drugstores were easily available, women used to depend on some ingredients that are very common in our everyday life.

Those home remedies are also applicable in modern life, as they have no side effects like chemical drugs. So here are some common home remedies that are great healers.

1. Yoghurt :

Yoghurt has innumerable healing properties that promote quick recovery in any type of infections. Yoghurt contains a high level of vitamins and also it is an excellent source of zinc, which works very effectively in healing wounds.

Moreover, there are nutrients like iron, potassium, vitamin A, D and k, which work best on wounds.

How to Use:

i): Applying yoghurt on the area vagina is a tough job. So you have to Take the thicker portion of the yoghurt and apply on the affected area with the help of cotton balls. Leave the area for 2 hours and then wash off with cold water.

ii): You can coat a soft piece of clean cloths, or tampons with yoghurt and insert it into the affected area. This would give you the best results if kept overnight.

iii): External application:

You can take thick yoghurt in a bowl and apply it with your clean fingers. Leave it for 30 minutes, and then wash it with cold water.

iv): Yoghurt cubes:

Place yoghurt in ice cubes in the deep fridge. Allow it to freeze. Then take out the cubes and gently rub it on the affected areas. Use as per your requirement.

v): Include yoghurt in your daily diet.

2. Coconut Oil:

Coconut oil is a natural ingredient that has natural anti-fungal properties.

Apply coconut oil externally onto the affected area and leave it for some time to set in. Then wash it off with water.

3. Apple cider vinegar:

Apple cider vinegar and white vinegar contains some essentials components that can cure yeast infection by controlling the fungus. All you have to do is to:

 i): mix two tablespoons of organic apple cider vinegar and an adequate quantity of warm water and drink it twice a day for a few days.

ii): prepare a mixture of apple cider vinegar and warm water. Apply it locally. Leave it for one and half hour. Soon you will get rid of the infection.

4. Garlic:

Garlic, the wonderful natural herb has antibacterial and antifungal properties, and so garlic is one of the natural home remedies to cure ailments.

Apart from this, the antibiotic properties of Garlic work best to heal infections like bacterial vaginosis

How to Use:

1): Take a few garlic cloves and crush it. Make a paste and apply onto the vaginal area.

ii):  Eating garlic cloves daily in the empty stomach can improve your immune system.

5. Boric Powder:

The antifungal and antibacterial properties of Boric Acid can be used to cure vaginal infection.

It’s a common thing that is always available at home. Boric acid also maintains the ph level of the vagina and help to keep it clean.

How to Use:

i): Dilute some boric powder with water.

ii): apply the mixture on the affected area with a cotton ball and leave for a few minutes. Then rinse it off. Do this twice daily.

6. Fenugreek:

Fenugreek is a common ingredient in our kitchen, It’s a small seed, yet powerful enough to cure infections on the skin as they are natural herb with natural antibiotic properties.

To apply on the area, you have to soak two tablespoons of fenugreek seed in water for the whole night and in the morning strain out the water and drink it in empty stomach.

This will help to keep balance in the menstrual cycle, which is an important factor for the health of the infection-free vagina.

7. Turmeric And Neem:

Turmeric and Neem are the most powerful natural products to heal any kinds of wounds and infection.  Both are being used as very common home remedies from old age.

They are well known for the anti-Inflammatory properties and considered to be the best home treatment for bacterial infection in the vagina. You can use the paste of turmeric and Neem on to the affected area.

Apart from this, you can take turmeric mixed with warm milk and Neem juice (one teaspoonful) in the morning.

8. Oil of Oregano:

Oil of oregano is an extract of the perennial herb Oregano Vulgare which has antifungal qualities.

On applying locally, oil of oregano stopped or slowed down the growing process of the Fungus in the vagina.

9. Hydrogen Peroxide:

The solution made by Hydrogen peroxide controls the growth of harmful bacteria. You can make a solution with 3% hydrogen peroxide and water, in equal amount and apply on the infected area.

It will disinfect the area as well as reduce the redness and itching sensation. Use the solution twice daily for up to 7 days.

10. Antifungal Cream Or Lotion:

Most common in use when such infection occurs. Available in all drug stores in different brands.

 The cream tube comes with an applicator. You can take Doctors advice and suggestion which one to use.

Some Common Tips to Prevent Vaginal Infection:

  • Take care of your personal hygiene. Use loose fittings undergarments made of cotton.
  • Take less sugar and junk foods as yeast grows on sugar.
  • Put off wet clothes as soon as possible, as yeast and bacteria thrive in moist places.
  • Don’t use any scented perfume, spray or lotion in vagina and douches without the consent of expertise, as they can damage the balance of good and bad bacteria which would cause Infection.
